Sonata for Solo Double Bass
I. Molto appassionato – Alla breve
II. Adagio molto espressivo
III. Rondo. Furioso
Duration: ca 13'

I dedicate this sonata to all the victims of the Covid-19 pandemic. The piece was composed in the very unusual circumstances at the beginning of the pandemic in 2020, during which the whole world completely changed in front of our eyes.

The first movement begins desperately with a motif that runs through almost the entire sonata. This is followed by a passionate theme, then a more optimistic second theme and after that a virtuosic middle section that ends with a long accelerando, as if there is no end to everything ...

In the second movement a theme begins in the lowest register of the bass. Later on there is an elegy for all the people who have died from the virus. Then the bass cries out in its highest register, followed by a constant alternation of low and high notes, as the conflict between citizen and state. The conflict escalates and leads to the third movement, a furious rondo.

The sonata was composed in spring 2020, and revised in 2021. It should ideally be played in solo tuning.
